Competing in the Red Bull Motocross of Nations on home turf wearing their own nation’s colors is one of the most spine-tingling experiences a motocross rider can have. As part of the British national team, which dominated the event for many years, Tommy Searle, 19, will live it on September 27 and 28.
Tommy, as a British rider, how do you feel about competing in the Red Bull Motocross of Nations in Donington Park?
The Red Bull Motocross of Nations is a huge event one way or the other. But when it takes place on home turf, it’s just all the more exciting. I’m particularly looking forward to the parade before the race.
How would you briefly describe what makes the Red Bull Motocross of Nations so extraordinary?
The fact that we wear our country’s colors and not just the colors of a team. Each nation sends its three best riders – that’s why the event is so willingly compared to the Olympic Games.
You’re a fan of the Donington Park circuit. Why do you like this course so much?
Because it’s built with a lot of know-how; it’s very varied. But mostly I like it for all its jumps. They really compliment my style.
The first MXON – back then known as Motocross des Nations – was held 42 years before you were born. How familiar or how interested are you in the history of your sport?
To be honest, I don’t know that much about it. Just that the British team won every year when the tournament started.
How optimistic are you that your team can tap in to this pleasant tradition this year?
We’re going to give it our best shot, but even in the best scenario we’ve only got underdog chances. The big favorite is the US team.
In 2008 you were runner-up in the MX2 World Championships. Are you going to have a go at the title next year, or will you move up a class?
Neither nor. Next year I’m going to America and will try my hand at winning a few AMA races.
To wrap things up, please give us a bit of personal information. Why is Motocross the most amazing of all sports?
Because no other sport is so much fun.
What’s your be-all-and-end-all goal?
Winning the AMA championship and the World Championship title.
And what distinguishes you in a race if your starting number is all covered in mud?
That’s easy. I’m the one right at the front!
